What is a Housing Choice Voucher?
The Housing Choice Voucher Program, known as Section 8, is a rental assistance program funded by HUD. The goal of the program is to create affordable housing opportunities for low and moderate income families. The Section 8 rental assistance allows Section 8 participants a broader range of choices in selecting rental units in the private market and would not have been possible otherwise.
Under the Section 8 regulations, participants are required to pay between 30 and 40 percent of their adjusted income for rent. The Housing Authority pays the balance of the rent to the owner of the unit. Becoming a Section 8 participant will require the completion of a Section 8 application and producing relevant documents required to determine eligibility. This may involve some effort on the part of the participant; however, with an experienced staff and state-of-the-art software, we hope to make the process as simple as possible.
Applying for Section 8Section 8 applications can be completed in person at the Section 8 office or online via this website; however, our Section 8 Waiting List is currently closed. Please watch your local newspapers and this website for information regarding future openings of the Section 8 Waiting List.
